Research: Hair extensions increase the salary of specialists and waitresses (2023)

Abstract

The main objective of our research was to determine if improving the appearance of women through the use of hair extensions could have a positive effect on their annual income. Two of the three groups, 55 members each, applied hair extensions and wore them for 4 years. Our findings were that women working in certain sectors received a significant increase in their earnings. Mainly catering and administrative assistance.

Therefore, we have concluded that in occupations where a woman’s appearance can play a significant role, the use of hair extensions to enhance her appearance can have a positive effect on women’s earnings.

Introduction

As the gender pay gap in the United States remains a key issue in the equal opportunity debate [1,2], we have followed a line of research that suggests that factors other than education, age or skin color may have an impact on women’s annual earnings and employment opportunities, such as a woman’s appearance. The focus of this document is on the length of women’s hair through the application of hair extensions, as research has shown that women with medium to long hair are considered more attractive than others. [3].

Definitions

The term ‘earnings’ is used in this document, as opposed to ‘income’, to refer to the income earned by women in selected fields of occupation. Either through their basic wages or tips.

The term “hair extensions” is used to refer specifically to airyhair types of hair extensions, which can be found in Appendix 1.

The term ‘perceived level of happiness’ is used as a subjective indicator that refers to the rating that each participant gives as they consider appropriate on a given rating scale.

methods

During the second half of 2011, a total of 1,567 women were interviewed. They were regular customers of beauty salons. Then we have grouped the clients of the beauty salon by:

  • Age
  • ethnicity
  • Occupation
  • Current salary

Of the 1,567 women surveyed, we selected those who had a permanent job; those who were of similar ethnic origins; and those who belonged to the same age group (24-27 years).

Demography

After the selection process, the sample group of participants was 165 women. This group was divided into three groups of equal numbers: 55 in each group. The goal was to create identical groups (in terms of age and ethnicity) and have the same or a similar percentage of women in similar occupations with similar salaries for each group.

During the experiment, 9 women left their employment. To maintain an even number of participants in each sample group, we randomly removed 6 participants to maintain a constant sample size of 50 participants per group.

The composition of the three groups was as follows:

Group 1 Ethnicity (Natural)

Group 1 Occupation (Natural)

Group 2 Ethnicity (26" Hair extensions)

Group 2 Occupation (26" Hair extensions)

Group 3 Ethnicity (30" Hair extensions)

Group 3 Occupation (30" Hair extensions)

From the beginning of the assignment, Group #2 and Group #3 received, respectively, 26” and 30” hair extensions. We have sent new supplies to each participant every quarter. This was done so as not to compromise the appearance of the participants for the project. Our instructions prohibited Group #1 from wearing wigs and/or similar hair enhancement products.

Additionally, participants were required to rate their happiness levels before and after applying hair extensions. This was done on a scale of 1-100 and continued to do so on an annual basis.

Results

The data collected yielded the following results:

Annual Earnings, Combined

Earnings of full-time female workers throughout the year, in US dollars

Annual Earnings, Combined

This table demonstrates that the combined annual earnings of the participants increased by 13.5% over the course of the research.

Annual Earnings, Administrative Assistants

Earnings of full-time administrative assistants for the entire year, in US dollars

Annual Earnings, Administrative Assistants

In this table, we can see very clearly that the annual earnings of the participants increased in proportion to the length of their hair or hair extensions. One interpretation of this data could be that the level of customer satisfaction and/or employer appreciation is directly related to the length of the hair of administrative assistants.

Annual Earnings, Waitresses

Earnings of full-time waitresses for the entire year, in US dollars

Annual Earnings, Waitresses

In this table, we can see very clearly that the annual earnings of the participants increased in proportion to the length of their hair or hair extensions. One interpretation of these data could be that the level of customer satisfaction and/or employer appreciation is directly related to the length of the waitress’s hair.

Annual Earnings, Nurses

Year-round earnings of full-time nurses, in US dollars

Annual Earnings, Nurses

For our participants who worked as nurses, the application of hair extensions cannot be linked to their slight increase in annual income. One interpretation of this table could be that nurses’ hair length has little or no effect on their employer’s level of recognition or their client’s satisfaction.

Perceived levels of happiness

Perceived levels of happiness (1-100)

This table shows the changes in the perceived levels of happiness of the participants throughout the four years of research. It indicates that in the first year of the project the levels of happiness increased a lot among the group of participants. This was true for 30” hair extensions, moderately among the group of participants with 26” hair extensions, and slightly among the group of participants without hair extensions.

In subsequent years, perceived levels of happiness decreased between Groups #2 and #3. The result is a small increase from project start to completion.

discussion and conclusion

We can draw several conclusions from this research.

First, we can conclude that the premise that women with long hair are more appreciated than women with shorter hair is validated by this study. Although predominantly among women who work in catering or administrative assistance.

Second, we can conclude that employer appreciation and/or customer satisfaction, and therefore earnings, also increase with hair length. This leads us to believe that women with very long hair are highly regarded by employers and clients alike. At least compared to medium length hair.

Third, we could conclude that the restaurant and administration sectors are biased towards women with greater physical characteristics. Therefore, they award higher salaries to employees with more socially acclaimed traits, such as long hair.

Fourth, it highlights a psychological reality regarding the mindset of the customer and/or employer, as they may no longer be rationally evaluating the professional skills of their waiter or administrative assistant. It could be said that their evolutionary instinct dominates their logical mind and therefore they reward perceived beauty with financial remuneration. This was specifically noticed with the waitresses as their tips went up dramatically. Increase your overall revenue by 15-20%.

Finally, there is a spike in perceived levels of happiness in the first year. This was after the application of hair extensions and should not be overlooked. Women’s happiness levels increased as a result of greater appreciation by employers and/or clients. Which resulted in higher gains and increased self-confidence! That, in turn, may have led to increased motivation at your workplace and contributed to overall earnings growth.

For occupations other than waitressing and administrative assistants, the effect was too insignificant to draw any conclusions.

Summary

In conclusion, as a consequence of the results of this research, women in the catering or administration sector may be interested in reducing the gender wage gap of which they are victims by taking steps towards improving their characteristics, with the application of hair extensions. However, this may not address the deeply entrenched gender stereotypes that women working in these sectors experience on a daily basis.
